CLOSING NOTES

THE FOOD INSECT NEWSLETTER
The Cultural Entomology Digest attempts to make a distinction between applied and cultural entomophagy. Dr Hogue described this distinction as follows: "Entomophagy as practiced to complete the regular diet of an Indian tribe is considered applied entomology; however, where entomophagy occurs for recreational or ceremonial reasons, it assumes a place within cultural entomology. This distinction is extremely subjective and as many members on Dr. Hogue's list are interested in entomophagy I would like to direct your applied entomophagy needs to Dr. Gene Defoliart's existing publication, The Food Insect Newsletter. His publication is dedicated to the use of insects from an applied perspective and I am sure many of you already subscribe. (Department of Entomology, 545 Russell Laboratories, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706. U.S.A.)

THE SCARAB AND THE GODS
Dr. Yves Cambefort of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris plans to release a book in December of this year entitled "Le scarabée et les dieux" resulting from ten years of research into Scarab references in culture. He also has a section dedicated to Sacred insects in Ilkka Hanski's "Dung Beetle Ecology" book.

CULTURAL ENTOMOLOGY ARCHIVES
The Cultural Entomology Digest has established database structures for collecting audio/visual/textual archives of cultural references to insects. The goal is to establish this publication as a hub of information. Most of the existing knowledge will be archived and accessible for future projects and endeavors. I have developed three submission forms corresponding to the three types of media to be archived. All submitted material will be returned promptly. Please contribute to developing these archives by sending your collected reference; small chunks at a time will keep me very busy.

E-MAIL OPTIONS
Electronic mail via Internet might prove to be an expeditious form of communication for those with access. I have established an Internet mail address: http://www.insects.org

WRAP UP
I hope this first issue serves to stimulate and consolidate interest towards cultural entomology. Please feel free send me your feedback suggestions and needs or even just an acknowledgment that you wish to receive future issues. Special thanks to everyone who corresponded with suggestions, permission, and contributions, making this first issue a reality. The next issue of Cultural Entomology Digest planned for January 1994 will focus on cultural references to beetles and will provide a literature checklist for this field of interest. If you have a specific interest in this area please think about submitting an article or two and compiling a list of discovered references.
