Cicada

Genus species
HomopteraCicadidae
Order, Family and Description

Cicadas have two sets of wings with the forewing longer than the hindwing pair. The male of some species sing a loud and distinct courtship song to potential female mates. Handling cicada specimens often results in a warning note, thankfully of considerably lower volume than their full song. Cicadas have three different mechanisms for producing their song ranging from specialized tymbal structure to stridulation and simple wing clapping. Cicadas have a subterranean nymphal stage ranging from 4 to 17 years. The adult lays eggs in twigs which usually suffers considerably from the intrusion.
