Order, Family and Description

Eyespots on moth wings are designed to imitate vertebrate eyes and come in many shapes, sizes and colors with this specimen possessing a small but distinct pair. Eyespots are usually located on the hind wings and are normally concealed by a pair of well camouflaged forewings. In the case of small eyespots, the usual purpose is to divert the focus of an attack to non-critical portions of the moth. Butterflies and moths can often be seen with beak-shaped clips taken out of their wings where birds have directed attacks and ended up with nothing more more than a beak full of scales.
